Academic Enrichment 2010 Programs
Beneath The Sea
Session 1: June 21st through July 2nd
Waves crash, tides roll, and the blue pacific stretches as far as the eye can see. Beneath it all there is another world! This session, Campers will discover the amazing creatures and abundant life that inhabits our local waters, sandy shores and tide pools. Participants will also learn how ocean currents affect our local climate.
Rocks & Fossils
Session 2: July 5th through July 16th
What is a rock? How can different rocks be identified? What is a fossil? How are fossils formed? How can Fossils be used to identify extinct plants and animals? Campers enjoy hands-on experiments that include a rock hunt using rock hammers, looking at crystal formations, examining a large variety of fossils, and participating in a fossil dig. Activities include use of microscopes, reading fiction and non-fiction material, learning songs, and lots of hands-on discovery based experiences.
NatureNauts
Session 3: July 19th through July 30th
This session is for the budding naturalist! We will learn to observe nature by spending time outdoors exploring our fields, watching birds, collecting and viewing insects, and studying plant life. Campers will learn to press plants, identify insects and spiders using dichotomous keys, and get a real “hands-on” look at what lives in the soil. We’ll perform kind experiments with snails and even have a snail race!
Crazy Chemistry
Session 4: August 2nd through August 13th
Campers enjoy an extraordinary and fun experience learning about chemistry. Exciting (and really messy) demonstrations and hands-on experimentation lead to discovery of how chemicals react with one another. Campers reproduce these reactions using simple household materials. Children will explore: acid and alkaline, salts, compounds, chemical reactions diffusion, color change reactions, and more. Children handle only household chemicals such as water, baking soda, vinegar, acetic acid and will wear protective gloves and goggles.
